Since the Rochdale Pioneers founded the modern cooperative movement in 1844, cooperatives — enterprises that are people-centred, jointly owned and democratically governed by their members — have taken root in every industry and every region. There are now roughly 3 million cooperatives worldwide, counting more than 12% of the world’s population among their members. Through nearly two centuries of economic change, the cooperative economy has shown remarkable resilience across cycles, sectors and borders.

The authoritative benchmark for the global cooperative economy
The World Cooperative Monitor (WCM) is jointly compiled by the International Co-operative Alliance and the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises (Euricse), and is the core data source on the scale and impact of the world’s cooperative and mutual economy. The 13th edition was released in Doha as a special report for the UN International Year of Cooperatives 2025, covering the world’s 300 largest cooperatives (FY2023 data).
Agriculture (35.7%), insurance (31.7%) and wholesale & retail (18%) together account for more than four-fifths of revenue. Ranked by turnover relative to per-capita GDP, India’s Amul and IFFCO top the global list. The report provides two ranking methodologies: by turnover, and by turnover relative to per-capita GDP.
