Data & Method

Data Centre

This page describes a planned indicator dictionary and query pipeline: starting from public tables such as WCM/ICA, unifying entity, sector and country codes, and outputting a long-format table ready for chart rendering. The site currently consists mainly of static documentation and examples; downloadable CSV and API access can be added later.

Indicator design follows three principles: clear definitions, traceable sources and limitations disclosed up front.

Core indicator dictionary (draft)

IndicatorDefinitionPrimary sourceCaveats
TurnoverConsolidated operating revenue of the cooperative group, usually converted from local currency into a comparable unitWCM Top 300Differences in consolidation scope, or the exclusion of associates and unconsolidated subsidiaries, can affect rankings
MembersMembership in a legal or bylaw sense; may differ from a "customer" or "policyholder" countWCM, ICA country narrativesFor banking and insurance cooperatives, the statistical definition in the footnotes usually needs to be checked
EmployeesDirect employment positions; excludes the full value-chain employment multiplierWCMShould be distinguished from broader "jobs supported" claims used in advocacy materials
Turnover / GDPRatio of an entity's turnover to nominal GDP, reflecting relative scale within the national economyWCM, World Bank GDPFor countries or territories with a small GDP denominator the ratio can swing widely, so it should be read alongside population and per-capita indicators
Sector mappingMaps reported sectors onto the WCM sector classification (e.g. agriculture & food, insurance, retail)WCM methodologyDiversified groups may be assigned to a single dominant sector, introducing truncation error

Dimensions

  • Geography: country, ICA region, optional city/province
  • Time: fiscal year, report publication year, notes on data lag
  • Organisation: cooperative / mutual / top-tier legal entity of the group

Output formats

  • Long table: entity × year × indicator
  • Panel: country × year × sector share
  • Charts: JSON configurations for line, bar, map and treemap visuals

Quality and provenance

Every derived indicator should retain a source URL, capture/entry timestamp and revision number. Where a figure differs from the original due to rounding, the footnote should state the calculation method used (e.g. the source of the mid-market exchange rate).
