It is an independent non-profit development organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable communities through entrepreneurship and business development, active in agriculture, marine activities and renewable energy, and it promotes cooperatives as one of the organisational forms it advances; it has undertaken international development cooperation in East and Southern Africa since 1978. The society enjoys royal patronage and is a member of the International Co-operative Alliance.
