Profile
The Federación de Cooperativas de Vivienda (FECOVI) is Uruguay's federation of user-housing cooperatives operating on the "prior savings" (ahorro previo) model. Its predecessor, FENACOVI, was founded at the end of 1969, and was reconstituted under its present name after the end of military rule in 1984, headquartered in Montevideo. FECOVI is distinct from FUCVAM, which follows the mutual-aid labour (ayuda mutua) model, and it links about a hundred housing cooperatives at various stages of planning, construction and completion, involving more than 5,000 families, making it an important second-tier organisation within Uruguay's housing cooperative movement.
