Profile

The Allgemeine Baugenossenschaft Zürich (ABZ) was founded in Zurich in 1916, originally as a working-class self-help housing project, and is now Switzerland's largest housing cooperative. According to its data, as of 2023 ABZ owned about 5,000 dwellings across dozens of housing estates in and around Zurich, home to about 12,500 people, with more than 8,900 members. The cooperative follows one-member-one-vote governance and devotes all surpluses to maintaining and expanding non-speculative, affordable housing. It is a member of the International Co-operative Alliance and European cooperative organisations.
